Yin Fire (丁) Day Master: the Flame

In saju, the Korean form of the Four Pillars, your Day Master is the Heavenly Stem of the day you were born. It stands for you in your chart, and there are ten of them. Yin Fire, written 丁 (jeong in Korean), is the fourth, and here we call it the Flame. Saju is a cultural tradition and a lens for reflecting on yourself, not a science, so read what follows as tendencies to try on rather than a verdict.

A light for the table you sit at

Picture a candle on a table, or a lamp on a desk late in the evening. It does not light the whole sky, but anyone sitting near it can see clearly and feel warm. That is the image behind the Flame. People with this Day Master often describe a similar style: quiet, attentive and warm in a way that is felt up close.

Fire is the element of warmth and visibility, and yin is its focused, inward form. Its yang sibling, the Sun (丙), spreads out and shines on everyone at once. The Flame works the other way. It gathers and concentrates, so its warmth can reach places a broad light skips over, like a worry someone has not said out loud yet.

What the Flame tends to do well

Flames often notice small things: a change in a friend's tone, a detail missing from a plan, the moment a room gets tense. You may be the person who remembers what matters to others and shows it quietly, with the right message at the right time rather than a big announcement.

Many Flames can also stay with something they care about long after the first excitement fades. Like a lamp left on through the night, the light tends to last, and others may come to rely on it.

There is a gentle flip side worth knowing. A flame is easily moved by drafts, and taking in so much of the mood around you can leave you carrying feelings that are not yours. Naming what belongs to you and what belongs to the room is one way of keeping the light steady.

The Flame among other people

You may not collect the widest circle, but the people close to you often feel truly seen. A conversation with you tends to feel private, even in a crowd, and friends may come to you when they want someone who listens before answering.

Other Fire people, Suns and Flames alike, are your peers. Next to a Sun you may feel a little less visible, and that is fine: the Sun lights the room and you light the person, and the two often work well together. In close relationships, saying out loud what you have noticed, rather than waiting to be asked, helps others know how much you are paying attention. It also lets them look after you in return.

What feeds the Flame

In the Five Elements, Wood feeds Fire. For a Flame, Wood often looks like calm learning, a mentor you trust or a few people who make you feel safe. A flame needs good fuel and some shelter from the wind, and many Flames recharge the same way. Because you take in so much around you, quiet time is less a luxury than fuel. A book, a slow walk among trees or an evening with no plans can all count as Wood.

Fire in turn feeds Earth, which in saju is grounding: something solid that your energy leaves behind. For a Flame, that might be cooking for someone, writing things down, teaching one person well or finishing a small craft. Your warmth often feels best when it takes a shape that outlasts the evening.

One Day Master is not the whole chart

Your Day Master is the center of your chart, but it is only one part of it. Your other pillars, the balance of the Five Elements and your ten-year cycles all shape how it shows up, so two Flames can look quite different depending on what surrounds them.

To see your own Day Master, use the free saju calculator below. It takes a birth date and, if you know it, a birth time.

One thing to try

This week, pick one person and give them ten minutes of full attention, with your phone out of reach. Afterward, send them one line about something you noticed, and set aside a quiet twenty minutes for yourself.
