Yang Wood (甲) Day Master: the Oak

In saju, the Korean form of the Four Pillars, your Day Master is the Heavenly Stem of the day you were born. It stands for you in your chart, and there are ten of them. Yang Wood, written 甲 (gap in Korean), is the first, and here we call it the Oak. Saju is a cultural tradition and a lens for reflecting on yourself, not a science, so read what follows as tendencies to try on rather than a verdict.

A tall tree in an open field

Picture one big tree with a single clear trunk, standing in a wide field. Its roots go deep, and it adds a little height every year. That is the image behind the Oak. People with this Day Master often describe moving through life the same way: choose a direction, then keep growing toward it, steadily and in plain view.

Wood is the element of growth, and yang is its upright, outward form. Its yin sibling, the Vine, grows by winding around whatever is nearby and finding the gap. The Oak grows by standing on its own. When something blocks the way, many Oaks meet it head-on and trust their own trunk to carry them through.

What the Oak tends to do well

Oaks are often reliable, upright and good at starting things. You may be the person who says “let's do this” and then actually turns up the next morning. Friends tend to come to you for a straight answer, and teams lean on you because you hold steady when plans wobble.

A strong sense of fairness is common too. Many Oaks protect people quietly, the way a tree gives shade on a hot afternoon, without needing anyone to notice.

There is a gentle flip side worth knowing. A trunk that rarely bends can find change tiring, and a direction chosen early can be hard to revisit. Bending a little is still a way of growing.

The Oak among other people

Because you stand where you said you would, people usually know where they have you. That makes you easy to trust and easy to ask for help. It can also mean others assume you never need any.

Two Oaks side by side make a forest, and people with this Day Master often work well with companions who share their drive. Trees also reach for the same light, though, and next to someone similar you may feel a pull to prove yourself. A forest does best when each tree has room. In close relationships, saying out loud what you need, instead of holding it like a trunk, tends to bring the people around you closer.

What feeds the Oak

In the Five Elements, Water feeds Wood. For an Oak, Water often looks like learning, quiet thinking time and people who support you without asking for anything back. A tall tree drinks a lot, so you may need refilling more often than you let on. After a long stretch of giving shade, a good book, a slow walk or a talk with someone wiser can be the rain your roots were waiting for.

Wood in turn feeds Fire, which in saju stands for expression: speaking, making, teaching, sharing what you know. Oaks often speak up only once they feel sure, so ideas can stay inside for a while. Letting a half-formed thought out early often helps your Fire catch.

One Day Master is not the whole chart

Your Day Master is the center of your chart, but it is only one part of it. Your other pillars, the balance of the Five Elements and your ten-year cycles all shape how it shows up, so two Oaks can look quite different depending on what grows around them.

One thing to try

This week, pick one thing you have been carrying alone and share it with someone, even half-finished. Notice whether your trunk holds up just as well with company.
